Less than 50 days to go until the 4th CIIE begins

SHANGHAI, Sept. 18, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The 4th China International Import Expo (CIIE), the world’s largest import expo, will continue to be a mega show for the world’s latest products, technologies and services, said organizers at the press conference marking the 50-day countdown to the expo on Sept 16.

Six major exhibition categories will be kept for this year’s event, which will have an exhibition area exceeding 360,000 square meters as well as more exhibitors than last year, according to Zhou Lingyan, deputy general manager of the business exhibition division of the CIIE Bureau.

Over 80 percent of the Fortune Global 500 and industrial leading companies that participated in last year’s expo will be present at this year’s event, a testament to the expo’s strong appeal.

Zhou said that the number of small and medium-sized enterprises are coming in groups to participate in this year’s event, 30% higher than last year.

Trade agencies, such as those from Japan, Denmark, Poland and New Zealand, have all increased the size of their booths to house more small exhibitors. “The Central and Eastern Europe booth is more than 1,500 square meters and will feature 60 companies,” Zhou said.

A total of 13 themed sections will be set up focusing on popular industries such as integrated circuits, public health and epidemic control, biological medicine and smart transportation, in line with the efforts to increase professionalism of the expo.

A section for innovation incubation will be set in the Intelligent Industry and Information Technology, Automobile and Medical Equipment & Healthcare Products exhibition areas, housing more than 100 exhibitors in the fields of artificial intelligence, life sciences and automatic driving.

A series of forums and other activities will be held during the expo to share entrepreneurship experience with startups, helping them gain easier access to the market.

Wang Hongwei, head of the buyers service division of the CIIE Bureau, said the division has held 17 roadshows over the past several months to introduce the expo to a wider range of businesses, and attracted more than 2,600 domestic companies.

Nearly 600 domestic groups of buyers will be attending this year’s expo. Through data screening, invitations will be issued to 40,000 targeted buyers to the fourth CIIE.

The CIIE Bureau and Bank of China will hold large matchmaking conferences during the expo from Nov 6 to Nov 8, where one-on-one meetings will be arranged between buyers and exhibitors with services such as interpretation and video links.

In the past three years, the on-site matchmaking conferences have helped more than 3,000 exhibitors and 7,000 buyers reach deals or future cooperation agreements, said Liu Wei, general manager of the inclusive finance department at Bank of China’s Shanghai branch.

This year, the exhibition will be held online with an offline experience zone in the North Hall of the venue, where visitors can use virtual reality devices to tour the online exhibition hall, said Cui Ying, director of the division of exhibitors recruitment of the CIIE Bureau.

Shanghai Electric Ranks 51st on ENR’s 2021 Top 250 International Contractors List

SHANGHAI, Sept. 18, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Shanghai Electric (601727.SS and 02727.HK) announced the Company has been ranked 51st on the 2021 Top 250 International Contractors list published by Engineering News-Record (ENR), a world-renowned publication for engineering and construction news and analysis.   • The 300MW first stage of the 900MW Phase 5 at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park (MBR Solar Park) completed a 10-day performance test in late July this year and entered commercial operation ahead of schedule in mid-August.
  • The first aquifer of the open-pit coal mine of Pakistan’s Thar Block-1 Integrated Coal Mine and Power Project has been completed at the end of June.
  • The 220 kV switch station at the Pančevo gas combined cycle power plant in Serbia completed backfeeding on August 19. The operating status of all devices involved is stable and showed promising results, which laid groundwork for grid-connected power generation.

In addition, the 300 MW Unit -1 of the Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram Thermal Power Station (DCRTPP), Yamuna Nagar of Haryana Power Generation Corporation Limited (HPGCL) has broken the records by completing a 145-day continuous operation on April 19, 2021, carried out by the Shanghai Electric engineers.

The maintenance mission came amid a challenging time when India was experiencing a new wave of COVID-19. Working under immense pressure and against all odds, HPGCL and Shanghai Electric engineers joined hands to undertake an overhaul for the unit, which allowed the unit to operate without any technical issues over the next five months. In March 2021, the unit recorded a monthly Plant Load Factor (PLF) of 86.32 per cent, which is among the best-performing power plant benchmarks across the country.

Unit 4 of Jindal 4X300MW coal-fired power plant in India also recorded a 711-day failure-free operation in September 2020, smashing the previous record of 684-day operation without breakdowns and set a new standard for the entire country. Nanfang Media report: China pushes forward master plans to boost Hong Kong, Macao economy

GUANGZHOU, China, Sept. 18, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The administrative organizations of the Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone were inaugurated on September 17. It’s an unprecedented move to involve a Special Administrative Region (SAR) in governing an area on the Chinese mainland, according to a Nanfang Media Group report.

This is in line with China’s plans to develop a Guangdong-Macao cooperation zone in Hengqin and to further develop a Shenzhen-Hong Kong cooperation zone in Qianhai which was issued on September 5 and 6, aiming to provide more space to drive Hong Kong and Macao’s development.

New system to further Guangdong-Macao integrated development

Hengqin is located in Zhuhai City in Guangdong, just across from Macao, and covers an area of 106 sq km, three times the size of Macao.

Created in 2009, the area is planned to offer Macao new space for economic development. However, the Hengqin development has, until now been mainly directed by Zhuhai, despite its mission to serve Macao.

Under the plan, the management committee co-led by Macao’s Chief Executive and Governor of Guangdong will jointly make decisions on major planning, policies, projects and personnel arrangements while the executive committee will manage the zone’s economy and people’s well-being.

Starting from Friday, Macao vehicle owners who want to drive into Hengqin can complete the license application process in Macao. Some enterprises got the first batch of business licenses, and a group of Hong Kong and Macao physicians were granted certificates to work in the zone.

“The new model will mobilize Macao to participate in Hengqin’s development,” said Wang Fuqiang of the China Center for International Economic Exchange, “It will also create an integrated environment that is more suitable to Macao businesses and more favorable to Macao residents.”

In addition, the Hengqin plan indicates that priority will be given to health, modern finance, hi-tech, exhibitions and trade, and culture and sports industries. Eligible industries and enterprises in the zone are subject to a reduced tax rate of 15 percent on business income tax.

“The cooperation zone will maintain the distinction of Macao through developing its signature industries such as traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), tourism and convention,” said Guo Wanda, Executive Vice President of China Development Institute, “It aims to diversify the Macao economy that until recently has been over-reliant on the gambling industry and vulnerable to external risks.”

Guo Wanda highlighted Macao’s universities and its state key laboratories have been doing research on such fields as integrated circuits, new materials and bio-medicine.

“Although they are not necessarily competitive industries of Macao, it will be a boost for sci-tech research and high-end manufacturing through cooperation with other Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area cities,” said Guo.

Qianhai expanded to tackle Hong Kong economic problems

According to the Qianhai plan, the Shenzhen-Hong Kong cooperation zone will be expanded eight times to 120.56 sq km from the current 14.92 sq km. It’s considered as a chance for Hong Kong to tackle some economic problems attributed to the limited space.

Statistics show a total of 11,500 Hong Kong-invested companies registered in Qianhai, an area located in Shenzhen neighboring Hong Kong, and 22.6 billion USD Hong Kong investment employed in Qianhai to date.

“A large number of Hong Kong modern service providers entered the Chinese market through Qianhai but their need is far from fulfilled,” said Cong Liang, Vice Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission, “Qianhai’s expansion not only offers more space but involves more industry categories to bring Hong Kong’s superiority into full play.”

Qin Weizhong, Shenzhen Mayor, added the city would guarantee one third of its newly transferred industrial land to serve the demand from Hong Kong-funded enterprises.

“We can tell the central government cares about the development of Hong Kong and Macao through these plans,” said Allan Zeman, Chairman of LanKwai Fong Group, a Hong Kong-based company involved in diverse sectors.

Guinea Junta Defiant Over Letting Conde Leave Country

Guinea’s junta has said it will not bow to pressure from West African leaders to allow ousted President Alpha Conde to leave the country.

Dozens of Guineans protested against sanctions levelled against their country as two West African presidents arrived for talks with coup leaders on Friday (September 17).

One sign says ECOWAS, that’s West Africa’s main regional bloc, “doesn’t decide for us”.

But it wasn’t only outside the airport in the capital Conakry where defiance was on show.

On Thursday (September 16), ECOWAS agreed to freeze the financial assets of the junta and their relatives, and bar them from traveling.

The next day presidents Alassane Ouattara of Ivory Coast and Ghana’s Nana Akufo-Addo arrived in Guinea.

They were asking for Conde’s release.

But on state television the junta, which seized power two weeks ago, said: “The former president is and remains in Guinea. We will not yield to any pressure.”

After talks with coup leader Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, Akufo-Addo said they had held “honest, brotherly meetings” and that he was confident Guinea and ECOWAS would find a way to “walk together.”

WHO: Rich Countries’ Chokehold on COVID Vaccines Prolongs Pandemic in Africa

GENEVA — The World Health Organization is warning that COVID-19 vaccine export bans and hoarding by wealthy countries will prolong the pandemic in Africa, preventing recovery from the disease in the rest of the world.

While more than 60% of the U.S., European Union, and British populations have been vaccinated, only 2% of COVID vaccine shots have been given in Africa.

The COVAX facility has slashed its planned COVID-19 vaccine deliveries to Africa by 25% this year. WHO Africa regional director Matshidiso Moeti says the 470 million doses now expected to arrive by the end of December are enough to vaccinate just 17% of Africans on the continent.

“Export bans and vaccine hoarding still have a chokehold on the lifeline of vaccine supplies to Africa.… Even if all planned shipments via COVAX and the African Union arrive, Africa still needs almost 500 million more doses to reach the yearend goal. At this rate, the continent may only reach the 40% target by the end of March next year,” Moeti said.

The WHO reports more than 8 million cases of COVID-19 in Africa, including more than 200,000 deaths. Forty-four African countries have reported the alpha variant and 32 countries have reported the more virulent and contagious delta variant.

Moeti warns of further waves of infection and loss of life in this pandemic. Given the short supply of vaccines, she urges strict adherence to preventive measures, such as mask wearing and social distancing.

She reiterates WHO’s call for a halt to booster shots in wealthy nations, except for those with compromised immune systems and at risk of severe illness and death.

“I have said many times that it is in everyone’s interest to make sure the most at-risk groups in every country are protected. As it stands, the huge gaps in vaccine equity are not closing anywhere near fast enough. The quickest way to end this pandemic, is for countries with reserves to release their doses so that other countries can buy them,” she said.

Moeti said African countries with low vaccination rates are breeding grounds for vaccine-resistant variants. She warned this could end up sending the world back to square 1, with the pandemic continuing to ravage communities worldwide if vaccine inequity is allowed to persist.

Malawi Trial Shows New Typhoid Vaccine Effective in Children

BLANTYRE, MALAWI — Malawi plans a nationwide rollout of the newest typhoid vaccine after a two-year study, the first in Africa, found it safe and effective in children as young as 9 months. Previously available vaccines were found not effective in children younger than 2 years and even then only provided short-term protection.

Typhoid is an increasing public health threat in Malawi and across sub-Saharan Africa with an estimated 1.2 million cases and 19,000 deaths each year.

Typhoid is a treatable bacterial infection that has become a serious threat in many low- and middle-income countries.

In Malawi, the study on the efficacy of the Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine or TCV involved about 28,000 children aged between 9 months and 15 years from three townships in the commercial capital, Blantyre.

The University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health, the Blantyre Malaria Project, and the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Trust conducted the study.

Professor Melita Gordon, principal investigator for the study at the Malawi-Liverpool Wellcome Trust, says the results, released this week, show an efficacy rate of more than 80% in protecting children against the disease.

“The previous vaccines were only 50% effective, and they were never even tested very well in the very youngest children. They were never even usable in the youngest children. So, the fact that this new conjugate vaccine works in pre-school children, right down to 9 months is a really big deal and important to be able to tackle typhoid across the board in all the children who suffer with it,” she said.

Gordon also said the vaccine efficacy data provides hope that sub-Saharan Africa can be rid of the multidrug-resistant strain of typhoid that arrived from Asia about a decade ago.

“In Malawi, the incidents are something [around] four or five hundred cases per 100,000 per year. Now anything over 200 is considered high incidence, so we are a very high-incidence country. There have been studies in Burkina Faso, in Ghana, in Kenya; we know that many other African countries have an equivalent burden of the disease,” Gordon said.

Dr. Queen Dube, chief of health services in Malawi’s Health Ministry, says rollout should begin soon.

“The exciting news is that we had applied to GAVI that supports us on the vaccination front to add this to the list of vaccines we are administering in the country and GAVI approved our application. And we are looking at introducing this typhoid vaccine and rolling it out next year,” Dube said.

However, some fear the new typhoid vaccine would face hesitancy and resistance from people, as has been the case with COVID-19 vaccines, and which led to the incineration of about 20,000 expired doses in Malawi in May.

But Dube said this won’t happen with typhoid vaccine because COVID-19 was a new disease.

“We have had typhoid for decades and decades, so people know what typhoid is. Nobody will wake up in the morning saying, oh no, typhoid was manufactured in a laboratory. And so, chances that you will end up with misinformation are on the lower side compared with a new disease which swept across the globe, killing so many people brought a lot of fear and a allowed a lot of false theories,” she said.

Still, Dube said Malawi’s government plans to launch a massive sensitization campaign to teach people about the new typhoid vaccine to a reemergence of the myths and misinformation that engulfed the COVID-19 vaccine rollout.

فازت شركة زي تي إي بالحصة الأكبر في العطاء المُقام على القسم 4 الخاص بتوريد أجهزة التوجيه المتطورة المركزية لتشاينا موبيل
