Buea: Four years have passed under the leadership of Bishop Michael Bibi in the Diocese of Buea, drawing both attention and admiration from many Christians in the region. After taking canonical possession on February 25, 2021, Bishop Bibi succeeded Bishop Immanuel Bushu, who retired, leaving behind a complex socio-economic and political environment for his successor to navigate.
According to Cameroon News Agency, the Diocese of Buea has largely stayed out of the public eye for negative reasons, except for the ongoing dispute between Bishop Bibi and Father George Nkeze over the Catholic University Institute of Buea (CUIB). This issue continues to evolve, but the soon-to-be-inducted Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon (PCC), Miki Hans Abia, could learn valuable lessons from Bishop Bibi’s leadership style.
One notable aspect of Bishop Bibi’s approach is his humanitarian and empathetic engagement with the community. He has been seen in remote areas of the Fako Division, which his Diocese covers, providing support and reassurance to displaced individuals, the poor, and those on the social periphery, such as bikers. Bishop Bibi appears to share a special connection with the people of Bafia, Ikata, and other isolated regions in Muyuka.
Additionally, Bishop Bibi has emphasized personal evangelization. His Monday teachings in various parishes throughout the Diocese are broadcasted via the Diocese’s radio and television channels, reaching a wide audience. This initiative has strengthened the spiritual growth and dedication of the Christian community and demonstrates effective communication strategies to engage the intended audience.
Furthermore, the completion of the Divine Mercy Co-Cathedral in Molyko, a project initiated by his predecessor Bishop Bushu, has been a significant achievement. Its dedication was a moment of joy for many Christians who had long awaited its completion. Similarly, the PCC’s Synod Office’s second phase may require the same continuity in vision for successful completion.
As Bishop Michael Bibi celebrates his anniversary, there is anticipation for similar leadership qualities from the incoming PCC Moderator, Rt. Rev. Miki Hans Abia. The community awaits with bated breath to see how his leadership will unfold.
