Correctional Department Plants Over 2,000 Trees in Kajiado as Part of Conservation Effort

Kajiado: In a bid to conserve the environment and combat climate change, the Principal Secretary for Correctional Services, Dr. Salome Beacco, led staff from the department in planting over 2,000 trees at the Kajiado G.K Prisons.

According to Kenya News Agency, the tree planting exercise is part of the department’s efforts to participate in the Greening Kenya Initiative. This initiative aligns with the President’s national agenda for landscape restoration, with the planting exercises scheduled to occur concurrently across all correctional facilities every first Thursday of the month.

Dr. Beacco emphasized the department’s commitment to leading the National Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Program, which aims to cultivate 100 million trees annually. She noted that the trees would be planted within prison lands, with the surplus either sold or donated to organizations and communities.

The department plans to plant indigenous tree varieties across all correctional facilities in the country, tailored to the specific ecology of each area. Dr. Beacco was accompanied by senior staff from the department, including the Commissioner General of Prisons, Patrick Aranduh.
