Diplomatic Community in Addis Puts Footprints as Part of Planting 500 Million Seedlings Today

The Addis Ababa-based diplomatic community and ambassadors have put their footprints as part of the Ethiopian Green Legacy initiative to plant 500 million seedlings today.

In a program conducted early this morning with the presence of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonnen, the diplomatic community and ambassadors participated in this massive national tree planting campaign.

The east African nation is planting 500 million tree seedlings today—in a single day across the country by mobilizing millions of people and register a new record.

Children, elders, people with disabilities and women are actively participating in the planting of 500 million trees in 12 hours, it was indicated.

“Ethiopians from all walks of life regardless of their age and sex are taking part in the campaign which is part of the Green Legacy Initiative we are implementing to bequeath a better Ethiopia for coming generations,” Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said in his early morning speech.

He added seedlings mainly constituting fruit plants are vital to address shortage of fruits in cities, increase productivity and create more jobs in the sector besides enabling the nation to combat impacts of climate change.

“We have already begun the campaign early in the morning and it will continue till dusk,” the premier said.
