Foreign ministers of EU countries will discuss sanctions against Niger and ways to support a possible military intervention by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) during an informal meeting in Spain on August 31, a diplomatic source at the mission of one of the European countries in Brussels reported.
“The situation in Niger will be discussed at the informal meeting of EU foreign ministers on August 31 in Toledo. The [EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep] Borrell, will present his proposals to impose sanctions on the perpetrators of the coup in Niger and the illegitimate leaders. Ministers will also be able to exchange views on the possible support that the European Union can provide to ECOWAS members for the implementation of a military intervention in Niger,” he informed.
“Ministers will also listen to the position of France, which has particularly close relations with the region,” added the diplomat.
