Nausori: The Chinese community in Fiji and residents of Nausori, the fourth most populous municipality in the country, gathered in numbers at the Nausori Plaza for a folklife festival to celebrate the Chinese New Year on Saturday.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the event was organized by the China Cultural Centre in Fiji and featured an address by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Biman Prasad. Prasad emphasized that the Chinese New Year is more than just a cultural tradition, describing it as an occasion to reflect on values that transcend borders and resonate with everyone.
He also mentioned that the Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is a global celebration that brings together people from various backgrounds. Prasad highlighted the importance of such events in fostering learning, embracing differences, and building stronger bonds of friendship and mutual respect.
Chinese Ambassador to Fiji Zhou Jian provided insights into the symbolism of the Year of the Snake, which represents agility, wisdom, and vitality in Chinese culture. He noted that the celebration in Nausori underscored the significance of cultural exchange, community unity, and the shared contributions enriching Fiji’s history and society.
In addition to the festivities, Post Fiji and the China Cultural Centre jointly issued special stamps to commemorate the upcoming Chinese zodiac Year of the Snake.
