Five Public Etiquette Rules Cameroonians Should Embrace More

Douala: Five rules of public etiquette have been highlighted as areas needing improvement for Cameroonians, aiming to enhance communal harmony and public hygiene.

According to Cameroon News Agency, one significant concern is the practice of speaking over open food. With many food vendors selling their products by the roadside in unsanitary conditions, there is a risk of contamination from hair, spit, or dust. Customers are advised to avoid talking over open food and to refrain from touching it with unwashed hands, especially if they do not intend to purchase it. Wearing face masks and ensuring food is covered can mitigate these risks.

Another area requiring attention is the use of loud mobile phones in public spaces without headphones. It is considered inconsiderate to listen to music or watch videos at high volumes in public, as it disrupts the peace of others. This behavior is particularly problematic in confined spaces like VIP buses and planes, where passengers are often provided with headphones to maintain a quiet environment.

The third etiquette rule involves refraining from talking with a full mouth and ensuring lips are wiped clean while eating. This practice not only maintains personal hygiene but also respects the dining experience of others. It is especially important in public dining settings, where seeing chewed food can be off-putting for fellow diners.

A common issue among Cameroonian men is public urination, which often results in the exposure of their genitals. This behavior is deemed disrespectful and unsanitary. Men are urged to find appropriate facilities and maintain privacy, preserving public decorum and self-respect.

Finally, maintaining order in public spaces like offices, banks, and bus stations by following queues is emphasized. In contrast to the orderly systems observed in countries like Ghana, South Africa, and Israel, jumping the line due to personal connections disrupts public order and should be discouraged.

A bonus point mentioned is the dangerous practice of making U-turns in the middle of the road instead of using designated roundabouts. This disregard for road safety rules has led to accidents and emphasizes the need for drivers to adhere to traffic codes to prevent such incidents.
