Garissa: The business community in Garissa Town is appealing to the County government to hasten the rebuilding of the famous Suq-Mugdi market that was recently gutted by an inferno, destroying merchandise worth millions of shillings. The traders emphasized that the market is central to the lives of many, including the elderly and mothers with children, as it caters to their daily needs, with supplies coming from neighboring counties and as far as Nairobi.
According to Kenya News Agency, Garissa Deputy Governor Abdi Dagane has called for patience and encouraged traders to occupy Nadhif Market, adjacent to the Garissa Municipality, until a new market is constructed. This follows a pledge by President William Ruto during his recent working tour of the region. Residents of Garissa Town are also demanding adequate firefighting equipment and well-trained personnel to address frequent fire incidents that lead to destruction, injuries, fatalities, and significant losses.
Mama Sahara Ahmed and Dowlay Dualle expressed concerns over the absence of proper business premises with adequate infrastructure, which leaves traders frustrated and unable to plan their ventures. Ahmed noted that the market has been repeatedly destroyed by fire due to makeshift structures made from easily ignitable materials. Dualle emphasized the need for a modern market with necessary services, including a dedicated fire department and access routes, to prevent night fires that have caused many traders, especially women, to lose their properties.
Mama Ahmed, who lost property worth thousands of shillings, urged local leaders to ensure the restoration of livelihoods for the traders so they can support themselves and their families. The traders also expressed gratitude to the many well-wishers who provided tents, food, and financial assistance to help them restart their businesses.
