King Mohammed VI Celebrates UN Resolution Acknowledging Sahara Autonomy

Rabat: King Mohammed VI hailed a “historic victory” following the United Nations’ adoption of a resolution that recognizes the autonomy of the Sahara under Moroccan sovereignty. In a national address, the King emphasized the significance of the Security Council’s Resolution 2797, describing it as a ‘decisive turning point’ that distinguishes the period before and after October 31. He celebrated this development as a ‘diplomatic victory’ for the Kingdom after five decades of negotiations.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the King asserted that this resolution signifies “the end of the artificial conflict” concerning the Sahara, affirming that the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative is “the only basis for a realistic and applicable political settlement.” He also mentioned plans to update this initiative before presenting it to the UN in pursuit of a final resolution.

The King expressed gratitude towards countries that supported Morocco’s stance, specifically acknowledging the United States, France, Great Britain, Russia, Spain, and the European Union. He extended a “special mention” to former US President Donald Trump for his influential role in advancing a resolution to the conflict.

Focusing on the regional implications, the King highlighted that the Southern Provinces, now acknowledged as a development area under Moroccan sovereignty, are emerging as a center of stability and growth, particularly in the Sahel and Sahara region. In a gesture of reconciliation, Mohammed VI stated that Morocco does not view this achievement as a “trophy” and called for fraternal reconciliation, inviting “the brothers of the Tindouf camps” to join “the fold of a united Morocco,” assuring equal rights for all citizens.

The King also reached out to Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, urging “sincere and fraternal” dialogue to resolve differences and establish a foundation for renewed cooperation. He reaffirmed Morocco’s dedication to revitalizing the Maghreb Union based on mutual respect and complementarity.

Concluding his address, the King honored the Royal Armed Forces and the inhabitants of the Southern Provinces for their dedication to national unity, and paid homage to King Hassan II, “architect of the Green March,” whose 50th anniversary coincides with this international acknowledgment.
