Kongoussi Town Hall Initiates Digitization of Civil Status Archives

Bam: Kongoussi town hall modernizes its civil status by digitizing its documents On August 18, 2025, the Kongoussi town hall launched a major operation to digitize its civil status archives in order to modernize the management of the service and facilitate citizens’ access to their documents.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the digitization of documents is being conducted by the General Directorate for the Modernization of Civil Status (DGEMEC) of the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Mobility. It aims to digitize more than 256,000 documents covering the period from 1956 to the present day. As of August 29, more than a thousand documents have been processed, and the operation will continue until the archives are completely exhausted.

The President of the special delegation of the Kongoussi commune, Abel Dayamba, welcomed this project, which he considers crucial for improving services to citizens. For him, the approach will help reduce administrative delays and increase transparency in the sector.

DGEMEC Head of Mission, Ms. Rasmata Yameogo, explained that the activity is part of the national strategy to modernize civil status, which is to be gradually extended to all municipalities in Burkina Faso. “This process will enable rapid, secure, and reliable access to documents, while reducing the risk of loss,” she said.

Ms. Yameogo also added that the choice of Kongoussi was not accidental, given the security situation, which puts physical documents at risk of destruction. Fifteen officers, including three from the local civil registry office, are mobilized to carry out the operation.
