Minister Addresses Mobile Phone-Related Unrest at Nkwanta SHS

Nkwanta: Mr John Kwadwo Gyapong, the Oti Regional Minister, has met with teaching staff of Nkwanta Senior High School (SHS) in response to recent disturbances following the enforcement of a mobile phone ban on campus. The meeting aimed to foster dialogue and find a peaceful resolution to the unrest that erupted after school authorities seized mobile phones from students, citing concerns over distraction and negative effects on academic performance.

According to Ghana News Agency, the enforcement of the policy led to significant backlash from students, culminating in a protest and acts of vandalism on May 13, 2025. Mr Solomon Sarpong Bagman, Headmaster of Nkwanta SHS, expressed deep concern over the impact of the disturbances on the school’s learning environment and student welfare. He noted a worrying decline in discipline and appealed to the Minister for support in implementing stricter preventive measures.

In his remarks, Mr. Gyapong commended the teachers for their dedication to upholding discipline and academic standards. He stressed the need for collaboration between school administrators, teachers, and parents to help students understand the rationale behind the mobile phone ban. The Minister also acknowledged the challenges faced by educators in enforcing such policies and pledged his full support to the school authorities. He urged students to demonstrate good behavior, emphasizing that discipline is essential for securing a brighter future.

Madam Jacquelinda Attabra, the Oti Regional Director of Education, also addressed the gathering and emphasized the importance of clear communication between school authorities and students. She encouraged teachers to engage students in discussions about how mobile phone usage affects their studies and personal development. Madam Attabra reaffirmed her commitment to working closely with the Minister and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to foster a conducive learning environment-one that balances discipline with the evolving needs of students. She added that the Minister’s proactive engagement is expected to promote harmony within the school community and enhance the overall educational experience.
