Youth Encouraged to Play Active Role in Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation

Sunyani: Dr Mary Antwi, Head of the Department of Environmental Management at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), has called on the youth to contribute to the nation’s climate change mitigation and adaptation actions. She emphasized that engaging young people in these efforts would help build a climate-resilient environment and secure a sustainable future for the nation.

According to Ghana News Agency, Dr Antwi addressed students at Kyem Amponsah Senior High School during a forum held at Fiapre in the Sunyani West municipality. The forum was organized by the Department as part of the ‘Sustaining Our Future’ project, which is funded by the Global Greengrants Fund. The event, themed ‘The Role of Youth in Waste Management and Climate Resilience,’ aimed to educate students on adopting environmentally friendly practices, reducing plastic use, promoting recycling, and advocating for policy reforms.

Dr Antwi highlighted the importance of harnessing the energy, creativity, and passion of young people to create climate-resilient communities and improve society. She noted that many communities are increasingly threatened by environmental issues such as air and water pollution and climate-related disasters, which adversely impact health, economic livelihoods, and social equity.

She urged young people to become change agents and inspire action and innovation, calling on stakeholders and community leaders to collaborate in reducing plastic pollution. Dr Antwi also stressed the importance of investing in resilience and protecting vulnerable communities and groups from climate-related risks.

Mr Michael Amoako, Headmaster of Kyem Amponsah SHS, echoed the call for environmental consciousness among students, encouraging them to adopt habits that promote cleanliness and discourage littering. He remarked that climate change is a global concern and highlighted the critical role of youth in mitigating its impact. Mr Amoako urged students to take proactive steps within their communities to contribute to climate change mitigation efforts.
