Anti-party Comments, Repeated Misconduct: Petition Details ‘Sins’ of Ken Agyapong

Accra: A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has petitioned the party's General Secretary, seeking a disciplinary review of former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, over what he describes as a pattern of conduct detrimental to party unity ahead of the 2028 general elections.

According to Ghana Web, the petition, dated June 18, 2026, was submitted by Charles Opoku, Deputy National TESCON Coordinator for the New Juaben South Constituency. In the petition, Opoku accuses Agyapong of repeatedly making public statements against fellow party members and taking positions that undermine the image and cohesion of the NPP.

The petitioner claims that such actions contravene Article 3 of the NPP Constitution, which requires members to remain truthful and loyal to the party while protecting and promoting its good name. One of the key issues raised in the petition relates to Agyapong's recent criticism of the NPP Minority Caucus over the Afari Military Hospital project, alleging that false and misleading claims were made, damaging the NPP's reputation.

The petition also raises concerns about the activities of "The Base," a group that emerged following the NPP's presidential primaries. Opoku argues that the group's operations outside recognized party structures have created unease among grassroots members and could undermine the authority of established party organs.

Another matter cited as being of grave concern is a recent media interview in which Agyapong reportedly threatened to disclose confidential party information. The petitioner claims that Agyapong has publicly stated intentions to "attack the NPP" in June or July 2027 and has declared he would not campaign for the party in the lead-up to the 2028 elections. Such comments, Opoku contends, have generated anxiety among party supporters and members across the country.

Opoku further argued that if Agyapong possesses information regarding wrongdoing, misconduct, or corruption within the party, he should present it to appropriate party structures or state institutions rather than making public threats. The petitioner attached copies of media reports and interview transcripts to support his claims and urged the National Executive Committee and other relevant party organs to review the material as part of any disciplinary process.

The petition was submitted in the interest of preserving party unity, discipline, and the long-term electoral prospects of the NPP, especially as the party is currently rebuilding and reorganizing following its defeat in the 2024 general elections, with efforts underway to position the party for a return to power in 2028.
