Accra: Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has called on former presidential aspirant Kennedy Agyapong to set aside internal disagreements and focus on strengthening the party as they prepare for the 2028 general election. In a statement issued on June 19, 2026, Acheampong highlighted the risk that ongoing divisions pose to the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) chances of regaining power, emphasizing the need for unity and reconciliation over personal grievances.
According to Ghana Web, Acheampong urged Agyapong and their supporters to abandon "the weapons of internal warfare" and unite behind the party's flagbearer to serve the people of Ghana effectively. He acknowledged the high emotions following the primaries and stressed that the party cannot remain mired in internal conflict when it should be focusing on rebuilding and regrouping for the upcoming election.
Acheampong recognized the tensions, particularly involving Agyapong, that have surfaced within the party post-primaries. He admitted that some remarks during this period were regrettable and emphasized the need for restraint. While acknowledging Agyapong's grievances, Acheampong clarified that these incidents should not define the party or deepen existing rifts, asserting that the responsibility for such actions lies with individuals rather than the party leadership.
Furthermore, Acheampong stated that there is no evidence that the party's flagbearer, Mahamudu Bawumia, had any involvement in the attacks against Agyapong. He pointed out that the individuals responsible acted on their own grievances and cautioned against attributing their misconduct to the flagbearer or the entire party.
Acheampong's appeal comes amid comments by Kennedy Agyapong, who has vowed not to be silenced by internal criticism and has hinted at a new confrontation in 2027. Despite these tensions, Acheampong urged all factions within the NPP to embrace reconciliation, stressing that unity will be vital to the party's success in 2028.
