Burkina Faso Adopts New Decree for Diplomatic Mission Staffing and Remuneration

Ouagadougou: The Council of Ministers of Burkina Faso has adopted a new decree outlining the conditions for assignment, stay, remuneration, and benefits for staff at the country’s Diplomatic Missions and Consular Posts. This decree aims to streamline operations and enhance financial efficiency within these missions.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the newly adopted decree consolidates several previous decrees, including decree n°2019-1114, decree n°2019-0953, and decree n°2008-607, into a single framework. This integration introduces a new remuneration system based on ceiling indices by function, aligns consular and diplomatic functions, and sets a ceiling index for Defense Attaches. Additionally, the decree aligns military support staff with the rank of First Counselor.

One of the significant changes is the state’s decision to stop covering expenses related to the families of agents assigned to Diplomatic Missions and Consular Posts. Furthermore, there is no longer an obligation for the state to employ the spouses of agents, whether they are civil servants or not, within these missions or posts.

This decree is expected to significantly reduce operating costs for Burkina Faso’s Diplomatic Missions and Consular Posts, thereby allowing for better resource mobilization for the country’s development efforts.
