Accra: Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has questioned the circumstances surrounding former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta's reported residency status abroad. He argued that the development raises serious questions about accountability and public trust.
According to Ghana Web, speaking on Okay FM's Ade Akye Abia programme on Thursday, June 18, 2026, Gbande expressed frustration over Ofori-Atta's continued absence from Ghana amid allegations of financial impropriety during his tenure as finance minister. He noted that the former minister's stay outside the country has left many Ghanaians wondering whether a public official who played a central role in the management of the country's finances can evade accountability.
"Did we appoint a foreigner as our finance minister?" Gbande asked. He argued that Ofori-Atta, who served as finance minister for several years under the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration, remains a Ghanaian and must therefore answer questions relating to decisions taken during his time in office.
Gbande maintained that several other former government officials continue to reside in Ghana and have not left the country despite facing public criticism and political scrutiny. "If you have nothing to hide, why wouldn't you present yourself?" he quizzed.
Gbande also criticised the opposition NPP, claiming the party would struggle to convince Ghanaians on issues of governance and corruption unless it addresses concerns surrounding the conduct of some former officials. He further called on international partners to support efforts aimed at ensuring accountability rather than providing protection for individuals facing allegations of financial impropriety.
