Nairobi: The Elgeyo Marakwet County Government is set to convene a meeting with stakeholders in the sports sector as it plans to implement a new sports act designed to organize and regulate sports activities within the county. The deputy governor, Prof Grace Cheserek, emphasized that the act will particularly focus on the athletics sector, establishing regulations that coaches must follow.
According to Kenya News Agency, Prof Grace Cheserek highlighted the importance of ensuring that sports camps are well-managed to provide safety, particularly for female athletes. The announcement was made during a reception for young and elderly athletes who have represented the country with distinction. Among those present were young athletes from Tangul and Kerer primary schools, recognized for their achievements in the East Africa region youth championship.
Veteran athlete Rose Tata Muya urged young athletes to prioritize their education, advising them to devote 80 percent of their efforts to academics and 20 percent to athletics. She stressed that education would provide a sustainable livelihood beyond their athletic careers, especially in cases of injury.
Muya also warned against doping, urging athletes to take personal responsibility and report suppliers to authorities. She highlighted the importance of maintaining integrity in sports to preserve athletes’ careers. Additionally, she addressed the issue of gender-based violence among athletes, encouraging those in troubled relationships to seek help. Muya noted that Athletics Kenya offers counseling services to support athletes in maintaining healthy relationships and peaceful families.
