Treasury Launches Unprecedented Campaign Against Iranian Regime on Economic D-Day

Washington: An unprecedented, whole-of-government, economic campaign against the Islamic Republic of Iran and its enablers. According to U.S. Department of the Treasury, the U.S. government has initiated a comprehensive operation aimed at dismantling Iran's financial networks worldwide. Named Operation Economic Outcast, this initiative seeks to cut off economic lifelines sustaining the Iranian regime and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The campaign is a significant shift in U.S. policy, aiming to isolate Tehran economically. Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent stated that the aim is to end the Iranian threat, not manage it, under President Trump's leadership. The operation involves collaboration across various U.S. government departments to target networks that enable Iran to evade sanctions, smuggle oil, and fund terrorism. The Treasury has identified and mapped out facilitators and financial channels supporting Iran's illicit activities. As part of the campaign, countries are urged to take immediate action to cease Iran-related activities, with clear timelines provided. Failure to comply may result in those countries facing actions from the U.S. Treasury. The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has sanctioned nearly 60 entities, individuals, and vessels involved in supporting Iran's regime, including illicit nuclear and missile technology procurement and oil-revenue generation networks. The sanctions also expand to several critical sectors such as digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping, which Iran exploits to stabilize its economy. OFAC has issued new guidance on sanctions risks related to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and expanded the categories of Iran-related conduct subject to secondary sanctions. This move increases the risk for entities continuing business with Iran, potentially deterring further engagement. The U.S. Department of State has designated members of Iran's defense leadership and entities involved in military strikes against U.S. forces, adding pressure on Iran's military and economic capabilities. This action includes targeting Iran's global procurement network for sensitive technology and disrupting its cyber activities threatening U.S. infrastructure. Furthermore, international companies associated with Iran's petroleum sector face sanctions for enabling the deceptive movement and sale of Iranian crude and petroleum products. The campaign reflects the U.S.'s commitment to enforce stringent sanctions and isolate Iran economically.
