Toronto: Black Stars defender Jerome Opoku had more than just three points to celebrate after the Black Stars' dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Following Caleb Yirenkyi's stoppage-time winner, Opoku was joined on the pitch by members of his family as the Black Stars celebrated a memorable start to their campaign at Toronto Stadium.
According to Ghana Web, among those sharing the special moment with the Istanbul Basaksehir defender was his wife, Tanja, and their son, Cruz. The family posed for pictures on the field after the final whistle, capturing memories of a historic night for both Ghana and the defender. Sixteen years apart, the No. 3 shirt delivers again for Ghana at the World Cup.
Opoku and Tanja marked six years together as a couple in February 2026. The Ghana international proposed to her in May 2024 before the pair eventually tied the knot. Their son, Cruz, was born in November 2022 and has often featured in family moments shared by the defender.
Also spotted in the stands during the match was a man believed to be Opoku's father, who appeared to be among the family members cheering the defender and the Black Stars on from the crowd.
