Why Wontumi Is in Court and Others Are Not: Amaliba Explains

Accra: Abraham Amaliba has dismissed suggestions that Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, is being unfairly targeted by prosecutors. According to him, prosecutors are permitted by law to decide which individuals to pursue in court proceedings. According to Ghana Web, Amaliba stated on TV3's New Day that the legal framework allows prosecutors to select who to charge, emphasizing that this discretion is supported by law. He addressed concerns that the presence of other individuals with similar allegations does not inhibit the prosecution of a specific person. Amaliba further explained that in response to arguments about others potentially committing comparable offences, the legal system empowers prosecutors to choose cases based on available evidence and their discretion. 'The argument that there may be others does not stop the prosecutor from proceeding with a case against a specific individual,' he stated. He reiterated that pr osecutorial discretion is a recognized component of the justice system, highlighting its importance in determining which cases are brought to court.
