QNET denies involving individuals in fraudulent activities

QNET, a global wellness and lifestyle selling company, has denied involving individuals in fraudulent and illegal activities, including job scams and illegal migration.

This was in response to a recent report from the Western Regional Command of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) that about 66 Ivorians who were arrested and repatriated to their home country were living illegally in Ghana.

In the said report, the GIS claimed that the unsuspecting Ivorians, 45 men and 21 women, were recruited under the guise of operating an illegal online business (QNET) at their hide out at Anaji Hills in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis.

However, Biram Fall, Regional Manager for QNET in Sub-Saharan Africa, had firmly denied any involvement in such an incident.

In a statement, he said: ‘We are appalled by the misuse of our brand name in connection with these illegal activities, including job scams and illegal migration.

‘QNET is a law-abiding entity, and those who engage in our direct selling business to promote our produ
cts to others, do not need to travel from one country to another.’

According to the Sub-Saharan Regional Manager for QNET, the company took allegations of illegal and irregular migration or fraudulent activities very seriously and would take strong action against anyone found to be misrepresenting QNET.

He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to upholding ethical business practices, and strongly condemned such deplorable actions.

‘It is important for the public to understand that QNET is not an employment agency and does not make offers of guaranteed income or travel opportunities in exchange for money,’ he added.

Mr Fall, however, said as a legitimate global direct selling company, QNET provided a safe and legitimate business model where Independent Representatives earned an income only by selling its products.

Meanwhile, QNET had taken some significant steps in a bid to clear the misinformation about the company, its business model, and the direct-selling industry in general in the Sub-Saharan Africa re
gion, he said.

‘This includes launching the ‘Say No’ campaign in West Africa, both online and offline, to educate and warn the public about the rise in fraudulent activities conducted under the guise of QNET.’

He said the campaign was part of the company’s ongoing efforts to safeguard the integrity of its brand and protect potential victims from being misled.

The Sub-Saharan Regional Manager for QNET, therefore urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that misrepresented QNET. Individuals could visit www.saynocampaign.org to verify the legitimacy of QNET-related activities or send enquiries to the company’s Compliance Hotline via WhatsApp line +233256630005.

Ghana must adopt Hybrid Waste-to-Energy policy guidelines

Mrs Portia Adade Williams, a Research Scientist, Council for Scientific Industrial Research – Science and Technology Policy Research Institute (CSIR-STEPRI), says the country must adopt the Hybrid Waste-to-Energy (WtE) policy guidelines.

Such a policy, she said, would assist policymakers and stakeholders in assessing the opportunities, limits and risks of WtE technologies for effective planning and efficient investments in waste management.

Mrs Williams said the guidelines would also guide the implementation processes for WtE initiatives, which would contribute to Ghana’s climate change strategy.

‘We have gone through a process for more than two years developing this project where we have come up with a policy guideline to improve sanitation by converting waste to energy,’ the Research Scientist added.

Mrs Williams said this during a stakeholders’ dialogue which was organised by CSIR-STEPRI on the development of a Hybrid WtE policy guidelines for Ghana.

The dialogue intends to finally engage relevant sta
keholders and agencies at all levels to present the document to them and to seek their final input.

The German government through the Federal Ministry of Education and Research signed a 5.8 million euros contract with four institutions in Germany and one institution from Ghana, comprising other institutions to design and construct a 400kW hybrid WtE plant to treat municipal solid waste in Ghana.

The completion of the 48-month project will help to ensure the conversion of WtE commences in Kumasi this year and later extended to other parts of the country.

The overall aim of the project is to through research and development and capacity development, develop concepts for waste segregation and the conversion of various fractions into energy by using biogas, pyrolysis and solar PV plants.

The Research Scientist said open dumping and inappropriate disposal in landfills presented threats to public health and safety of the environment as well as contributed an estimated five per cent of global greenhouse gases to
climate change.

She said in Ghana, approximately, 30,000 tonnes of municipal household solid waste was generated daily, with the per capita ranging from 0.2 to 0.8 kg/person/day.

Professor Emmanuel Ramde, Executive Director, West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL), said the hybrid WtE plant located in Gyankobaa, in the Ashanti Region, held the promise of transforming municipal solid waste.

He said it was imperative to recognise the significance of the initiative, which did not only offer a sustainable solution to waste management, but also held the potential to alleviate pressure on traditional energy sources while promoting environmental stewardships and economic growth.

‘While we aim, through meaningful discussions, to validate the draft policy document, we hope to further create awareness about the document in addressing waste and energy management in Ghana,’ the Executive Director added.

Professor Paul Bosu, Director General, CSIR, said the CSIR was proud t
o be associated with the novel energy project, which converted municipal waste into renewable energy through various technologies.

He thanked the German government through the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, and WASCAL for funding the feasibility studies, which led to the selection as well as the implementation of the pilot phase of the project.

‘We have had a very good working relationship with our funders and we look forward to strengthening this collaboration way into the future for the mutual benefit of our institutions and countries,’ the Director General added.

Ghanaian recyclers, public sector reps explore India’s E-Waste management system

Ten Ghanaian recycling companies and some public sector representatives have benefited from a study tour to Bengaluru and New Delhi, India’s prominent electronic waste (e-waste) hubs.

The one-week tour, which took place earlier in March, aimed to elevate the country’s recycling sector and foster strategic partnerships between India and Ghana.

The German Cooperation (GIZ), in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, organised the first-of-its-kind exchange programme as part of the process towards establishing a comprehensive recycling system in Ghana.

A released issued on Saturday by the GIZ said E-waste, the fastest-growing waste stream globally, comprised 62 million tonnes annually from electrical and electronic equipment.

Despite Ghana not being a major producer of electronic goods, the country faced the challenge of establishing a comprehensive recycling system due to increased imports of used equipment.

In response, the German Ministry for Economic Cooperati
on and Development (BMZ) initiated the ‘Programme for Sustainable Disposal and Recycling of Electronic Waste’ in partnership with GIZ Ghana and MESTI since 2016, the release said.

‘The programme focuses on fortifying Ghana’s private sector, addressing critical issues such as infrastructure, technology, and sustainable business models.’

To stimulate innovation and collaboration, the E-Waste Programme organised the study tour to India, inviting 10 recyclers and four public sector delegates.

India, with its extensive e-waste recycling industry, provided invaluable insights and opportunities for cooperation.

The exchange encompassed visits to major recycling facilities such as Greenscape Eco Management, Lohum, and E-Parisaara, as well as SMEs like Vans Chemistry and Ecowork.

Discussions centred around recycling procedures, technology options, training programmes, and funding mechanisms.

Recyclers like Vivian Ahiayibor of City Waste Recycling were cited to have corroborated the enlightenment of the tour, par
ticularly witnessing Indian recyclers’ ingenuity in addressing sector challenges.

The programme culminated in a workshop at New Delhi’s O.P Jindal Global University, where e-waste experts, public and private sector representatives, and law students discussed the role of associations in driving industry interests.

Gilbert Odjidja, President of the Ghana E-Waste Recyclers Association (EWROTA), emphasised the imperative for Ghanaian recyclers to amplify their voices in industry dialogues, inspired by India’s private sector-driven e-waste system.

Upon their return, the recyclers expressed eagerness to implement solutions and forge partnerships to address e-waste management challenges.

The study tour coincided with the release of the latest United Nations Global E-Waste Monitor, underscoring the urgency of effective management of electronic waste.

Krachi West morgue poses health risk, Oti Regional Health Director

The erratic power crisis being experienced in the country is not only affecting homes and businesses but also the dead bodies in some mortuaries in the Oti Region.

Decaying bodies at Krachi West Municipal Hospital mortuary in the area are putting the health of residents and community members at risk.

Dr Osei Kuffour Affreh, the Oti Regional Director of Health Service told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that corpses stored in the mortuary were decomposing due to lack of electricity to power the refrigerators.

He said management of the facility had petitioned Nana Mprah Besemuna III, Krachi-Wura, Mr Patrick Bulator, the new Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and the Regional Health Directorate over the development.

He explained that the hospital was now compelled to ration power because it was costing authorities more to keep the generators on.

Dr Affreh lamented the effect of the power outage in Krachi West, which was negatively affecting the quality of health services rendered in the Municipality.

He told the
GNA that the hospital in the Municipality with low outage spend over GHC 60,000 every week to provide emergency and theater services, admissions, keeping blood, vaccines and keeping refrigerators running.

The Regional Health Director lamented that because of the power outages, most of the hospital equipment and machines have been damaged and called on CRIDCO and other authorities to address the power situation to avoid further decline of the situation.

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, has assured the Ghanaian business community of his plans to implement business-friendly tax reforms to boost transactions under his administration.

Interacting with members of the Ghana Union of Traders’ Association (GUTA) in Accra, on Friday, Dr Bawumia reiterated his resolve to implement a flat rate tax system after granting tax amnesty to all businesses and individuals in 2025.

He pledged to benchmark Ghana’s port duties to that of Lome Port, Togo and make sure it is at par or even lower than that country’s port, in order to prevent smuggling and diversion of goods and cargoes to neighbouring ports.

The NPP flagbearer assured the business community of his plans to implement specific duties at the port on 20-footer and 40-footer containers to ensure predictability of pricing of imported goods.

He believed that with the Bank of Ghana’s gold-purchasing policy, it would stabilise the local currency (the Cedi) and ensure stable ex
change rates, which would ultimately enhance price predictability.

‘My government will be business-centered and make Ghana one of the most business-friendly economies in the world,’ Dr Bawumia added.

He announced government’s plans to roll out Credit Scoring System for entrepreneurs and individuals by June, this year, to ensure lower interest rates on loans, especially for those who were honest with their loan payments.

‘Under my administration, we will reduce government borrowing by moving government’s expenditures to the private sector.’

To ensure affordable and reliable power supply, Dr Bawumia said he would focus on solar power by producing 2,000 megawatts of solar energy during the first-four years of his tenure as President of the Republic.

‘I am encouraged by GUTA’s positive reaction to my policy proposals, especially the tax amnesty and flat tax and container rates proposals, aimed at creating a friendly environment for businesses to thrive.’

The NPP flagbearer expressed profound gratitude to th
e leadership and members of the Association for the open, frank and fruitful engagements.

‘Together, we shall make Ghana one of the most business-friendly countries in the world.’

Earlier, Dr Joseph Obeng, the President of GUTA, highlighted some challenges Ghanaian entrepreneurs and traders were facing, including high cost of doing-business.

Members of the Association also took turns to ask questions, seek clarifications and make suggestions.
