Accra: Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has dismissed the notion that former coach Otto Addo predominantly utilized young talent Caleb Yirenkyi as a right-back. During a recent press conference, Queiroz addressed a journalist's inquiry regarding Yirenkyi's position, clarifying that the FC Nordsjaelland player was seldom deployed in the full-back role.
According to Ghana Web, Queiroz firmly countered the claims by stating that Yirenkyi only played twice as a right-back under Addo's management. He asserted that his analysis indicates the player was primarily positioned in midfield. Queiroz emphasized Yirenkyi's adaptability but expressed a preference for him as a midfielder.
Queiroz remarked, "I don't know which game you are assessing to say he plays as a right-back. It is true that in the national team he played two games in that position, maybe in the friendlies against Austria and Germany. But in the majority of games, he played in midfield. At his club, he plays different roles, sometimes in midfield and sometimes adapting as a center-back. In my opinion, he is a midfield player."
Yirenkyi made a significant impact by scoring the decisive goal in Ghana's 95th-minute victory over Panama in the 2026 FIFA World Cup opener. His dynamic performance in midfield was marked by efforts to regain possession and support offensive plays, despite receiving an early booking in the match.
