Parliament Marks Milestone with First Participation in Global Disability Conference

Accra: Chairman of the Parliamentary Caucus on Disability, Dr Clement Abas Apaak, has praised Parliament's involvement in the 19th Session of the Conference of States Parties (COSP19) to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) held in the United States. This participation is seen as a significant advancement in the nation's efforts to enhance disability inclusion.

According to Ghana Web, Dr Apaak led Ghana's delegation to the conference, which united governments, policymakers, and disability advocates globally to discuss the progress and challenges related to the rights of persons with disabilities. In a Facebook post, Dr Apaak expressed his privilege in leading the delegation to the event, highlighting that this marked Ghana's inaugural appearance at the global assembly following the Convention's adoption.

Dr Apaak emphasized the historic nature of Ghana's participation, noting that it was fully funded by Parliament. He extended gratitude to the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban S.K. Bagbin, for facilitating the delegation's involvement, which included five members of the caucus on Disability and their deputy clerk.

The conference offered an opportunity for participating countries to evaluate advancements in disability inclusion and renew their commitment to guaranteeing equal opportunities for persons with disabilities. Dr Apaak was particularly encouraged by Ghana's presentation, which emphasized key initiatives such as the proposed Persons with Disabilities Bill, increased support through the District Assemblies Common Fund, free tertiary education for persons with disabilities, and expanded social protection programs.

Dr Apaak concluded by acknowledging that while significant progress has been made, continued efforts are necessary to tackle the challenges facing persons with disabilities and to ensure their full participation in national development.
