Government Issues Warning to Politicians Stirring Tensions in Marsabit

Marsabit: The government has issued a stern warning to politicians and their allies in Marsabit County who are reportedly engaging in early campaigns with hostile undertones. Residents have been urged to maintain peace to support ongoing development efforts in the region.

According to Kenya News Agency, Marsabit County Commissioner James Kamau addressed the issue during a peace meeting at Maikona Baraza Park in North Horr constituency, attended by Governor Mohamud Ali. Kamau emphasized that the government had successfully restored peace and unity among local communities and would not tolerate attempts to undermine these achievements.

Kamau highlighted that certain politicians are under investigation for activities that not only challenge authority but also incite ethnic divisions. He reassured that the government is committed to ensuring the stability necessary for ongoing and planned development projects, including the resumed tarmacking of the Marsabit-Segel-Maikona road, a project valued at Sh10.1 billion.

The county commissioner called on Marsabit residents, particularly the youth and women, to support security agencies in maintaining the current peace. He noted that security forces are vigilantly monitoring politicians and their associates accused of inciting discord through premature electioneering.

Governor Ali praised local security teams for prioritizing the safety of Marsabit residents, stressing that maintaining peace is a joint responsibility of both the government and the public. He emphasized that peace and unity are crucial for development, allowing children to attend school and goods to move freely without security concerns.

Governor Ali urged residents to unite as Kenyans and resist divisive political tactics. He highlighted the importance of exploiting the county’s cultural diversity and resources for a better quality of life. Additionally, he encouraged locals to register with the Social Health Authority to ensure access to quality health services, noting that his administration has hired 153 additional health personnel this year to support universal health care delivery.

Other speakers, including county assembly members and elders, expressed gratitude to President Ruto for ongoing development projects in various sectors across the county. They reiterated the importance of peace and pledged to continue supporting peacebuilding efforts.

The event showcased a vibrant cultural display by traditional troupes from the county’s more than 14 ethnic groups, along with drama and dance performances by school teams, all promoting the message of harmony.
