Upper east region: Six students have been arrested for their alleged involvement in violent acts in separate cases in the Upper East Region. The Ghana Police Service has cautioned final-year students writing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) against engaging in acts of violence, vandalism, and other unlawful conduct as they complete their final paper on Friday, June 19, 2026.
According to Ghana Web, in a statement issued on June 18, 2026, the Police warned that any student found participating in criminal activities such as rioting, arson, assault, destruction of property, or any other offence would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law. The Police emphasized that such actions could have serious and long-term consequences on the future prospects of the students involved.
The caution comes in the wake of recent incidents of student unrest in the Upper East Region, which have led to the arrest of six students in separate cases. Police disclosed that two students of Zebilla Senior High Technical School were arrested in connection with an alleged arson attack on a teacher's apartment. In a separate incident, four students of Bawku Senior High School were arrested over alleged involvement in rioting, assaulting members of staff, and destroying both school and private property.
The Police urged candidates to mark the end of their examinations responsibly and celebrate peacefully without engaging in acts that could bring them into conflict with the law. The Service also appealed to parents, guardians, teachers, and school authorities to support efforts aimed at promoting discipline, respect for the law, and responsible behaviour among students during the post-examination period.
"The Police remain committed to ensuring public safety and will take appropriate action against anyone found violating the law," the statement indicated.
