4,000 Public Workers to Face Salary Deductions Over Unpaid Student Loans

Accra: The Controller and Accountant-General, Kwesi Agyei, has revealed that about 4,000 public sector workers receiving government salaries may soon experience salary deductions due to outstanding student loans. The initiative aims to recover debts owed to the Student Loan Trust Fund (SLTF).

According to Ghana Web, Mr. Agyei made this announcement during the 20th anniversary celebrations of the SLTF on Thursday, June 18, 2026. He stated that his office, in collaboration with the Trust Fund, has identified the workers and is finalizing plans to initiate the recovery process in compliance with current laws and payroll regulations.

'We have already identified over 4,000 on the government payroll through the collaboration with the Trust Fund. In the coming days, we will engage with the Trust Fund on the modalities of implementing these deductions. We envisage that this deduction will become one of the important statutory sanctions on their salaries,' Mr. Agyei stated. He emphasized that this measure aims to enhance loan recovery efforts, improve repayment compliance, and ensure the sustainability of the student loan scheme for future beneficiaries.

In related developments, the Chief Executive Officer of the Student Loan Trust Fund, Dr. Saajida Shiraz, announced a 50 percent increase in access to the Fund's standard student loan package. She credited the Ghana Education Trust Fund's (GETFund) timely release of funds for this achievement, which has enabled the SLTF to disburse over GHS127 million to more than 46,000 students and meet all loan requests.

Adding to the discussions, Emmanuel Bedzrah, the Board Chairman of GETFund, reiterated the Fund's dedication to the timely release of funds to support student loan disbursements. The SLTF, celebrating its 20th anniversary, is focusing on recovering outstanding loans while expanding financial support for students pursuing higher education nationwide.
