‫مجموعة ييلي تقدم جهودها للحفاظ على التنوع البيولوجي في مؤتمر الأمم المتحدة للتنوع البيولوجي

‫المؤتمر العالمي الأول للنظام الإيكولوجي الرقمي لعام 2022 يختتم أعماله بنجاح

‫شبكة تلفزيون الصين الدولية (CGTN): مناهج جديدة: كيف تدفع الصين البحث والتطوير بشأن لقاح كوفيد-19 والتطعيم

بكين، 21 ديسمبر، 2022 /بي آر نيوزواير/ — تعمل الصين الآن على تعزيز التطعيم ضد كوفيد-19 كأولوية خاصة بين الفئات الأكثر عرضة للإصابة مثل كبار السن لتعزيز حمايتها للأشخاص من الفيروس.

وقد أصبحت هذه الاستراتيجية أكثر بروزًا حيث خففت الدولة من إجراءاتها ضد الفيروس، مما سيساعد في تحقيق التوازن بين السيطرة على الوباء وسبل العيش الاجتماعية.

بدأ البحث والتطوير في وقت مبكر

طورت الصين أكثر من اثني عشر لقاحًا لكوفيد-19. وقد أحرزت تقدمًا كبيرًا في تطوير اللقاح بخمس أساليب مختلفة بما في ذلك اللقاح المعطل ولقاح ناقلات الفيروس ولقاح البروتين المؤتلف ولقاح الإنفلونزا الحي الموهّن ولقاح الحمض النووي.

بدأت الدولة في تطوير اللقاحات في وقت مبكر من بداية عام 2020 عندما نجحت في عزل أول سلالة من فيروس كورونا الجديد وسط الموجة الأولى من تفشي المرض. طرحت الدولة أول لقاح لكوفيد-19 للجمهور في ظل الاستخدام المشروط في 31 ديسمبر 2020، بعد أقل من عام من تفشي المرض.

بعد ثلاث سنوات من الجائحة، وافقت الصين على 13 لقاحًا لكوفيد-19، بما في ذلك خمسة لقاحات معطلة وخمسة لقاحات بروتين مؤتلف ولقاحين من لقاحات ناقلات الفيروس ولقاح إنفلونزاحي موهّن. فيما يتعلق بطريقة التطعيم، يكون 11 منها عن طريق الحقن، وواحد قابل للاستنشاق والآخر بخاخ أنفي.

كانت اللقاحات المتعددة مفيدة حيث أطلقت الأمة حملتها للناس لتلقي اللقاح المعزز الثاني. ووفقًا للخطة التي أعلنتها اللجنة الوطنية للصحة ( NHC ) في 13 ديسمبر 2022، فإن هناك ثمانية لقاحات مؤهلة في الخطة باعتبارها اللقاح المعزز الثاني لأنها أنواع مختلفة من اللقاحين المعطلين من سينوفارم وسينوفاك ولقاح مؤتلف واحد من كانسينو – والتي تلقاها غالبية الصينيين كخيارات تطعيم سابقة لهم.

واعتبارًا من 28 نوفمبر 2022، تلقى 86 بالمائة ممن تزيد أعمارهم عن 60 عامًا التطعيم الكامل بينما أكمل حوالي 65 بالمائة فقط من الأشخاص الذين تزيد أعمارهم عن 80 عامًا التطعيم الكامل. وهناك حوالي 25 مليون شخص تزيد أعمارهم عن 60 عامًا لم يتلقوا اللقاحات بعد.

A Development Approach to Forced Displacement: Transforming Refugee Spaces Through Targeted Development

The IGAD region is grappling with forced displacement crises of staggering proportions. Conict, drought and persecution have driven some of the world’s most vulnerable people from their homes. The region is host to some 4.51 million refugees and asylum-seekers, as at the end of June 2022. This represents an estimated 21.6 per cent of the global refugee population. The majority of refugees are from South Sudan (2.35 million). The region also has 12.75 million Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) mostly in Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Somalia, displaced due to both conict and natural disasters. The majority of the refugees and IDPs are in protracted displacement situations, lasting an average of over 10 years. A total of 686,000 refugees returned to their countries of origin, with 16,038 having returned between January and June 2022. IGAD Member States continue to warmly welcome those seeking refuge. Within host countries, refugees often reside in historically underserved border areas that are also environmentally fragile. This places additional strain on communities already facing a precarious socio-economic situation plagued by food insecurity, limited access to basic social services and economic infrastructure, poor livelihood opportunities, and a degraded natural resource base (World Bank, 2018).

 

Regional and global humanitarian responses to this crisis have saved lives, but are costly and unsustainable. Traditional refugee hosting models address only the basic assistance and protection of refugees but are not suitable for sustainable social, economic and environmental development.

 

A joint study conducted by the World Bank and UNHCR in 2015 found that humanitarian responses have limited capacity to deliver sustainable self-reliance and resilience. Furthermore, fragmented approaches and partnerships among government, humanitarian and development actors create substantial funding gaps that exclude refugee hosting communities. The study highlighted that the protracted displacement of refugees has created competition between refugees and host communities over scarce social services, economic infrastructure, livelihood opportunities, and environment and natural resources, and often leading to rising food and commodity prices, depression of local wage rates, and increased environmental degradation.

 

This situation called for a mind and paradigm shift for member states of IGAD and other partners working on displacement through generation of evidence that supports and gives reason to innovative development approaches.

Gambia Foils Alleged Coup Attempt, Arrests Four Soldiers

BANJUL — Gambian authorities have foiled a military coup attempt and arrested four soldiers plotting to overthrow President Adama Barrow’s administration, the government said on Wednesday.

 

The Gambian Armed Forces High Command arrested four soldiers linked to the alleged coup after a military operation on Tuesday, it said in a statement.

 

Coup attempts are not uncommon in the Gambia, a tiny West African country of 2.5 million almost entirely surrounded by Senegal, which is still reeling from over two decades under former president Yahya Jammeh marked by authoritarianism and alleged abuses.

 

Jammeh himself seized power in a coup in 1994 and foiled several attempts to overthrow him before he lost an election in late 2016 to Barrow.

 

His ouster was widely viewed as a boost for democracy, although there has been growing frustration with Barrow’s government for its failure to address poverty and rising living costs.

 

“Based on intelligence reports … some soldiers of the Gambian army were plotting to overthrow the democratically elected government,” the government said on Wednesday.

 

The army is in pursuit of three other alleged accomplices and investigations are ongoing, it added.

 

There were no details on whether the coup attempt was linked to the previous regime.

 

Eight ex-soldiers led by one of Jammeh’s former military aides plotted to overthrow Barrow the year after he came to power. They were sentenced to jail in 2019 on treason and conspiracy charges they denied.

CGTN: ‘New Approaches’: How China stepped up its COVID-19 treatments

BEIJING, Dec. 21, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — China has been racing against the clock in developing COVID-19 drugs while promoting vaccination – one for saving lives and the other for providing broad protection.

While the stringent COVID-19 containment measures of the past three years helped China evade deadlier variants than Omicron and prevented many deaths, the development of effective COVID-19 treatments also extend protection to people at high risk of exposure or with underlying health conditions.

China has taken initiative in the development of COVID-19 drugs from three main approaches since the beginning of the pandemic. The three strategies are inhibiting the virus’ replication machinery, blocking the virus from entering a target cell and regulating human’s immune system’s overactive response.

China’s first COVID-19 antibody drug, a cocktail therapy of two monoclonal antibodies of amubarvimab and romlusevimab, was approved for emergency use by the country’s drug regulator on December 8, 2021.

The treatment is applied through intravenous injection and randomized clinical trials across many countries suggest it is 80 percent effective in cutting hospitalizations and deaths among high-risk groups.

The antibodies used in the treatment have also proved to be broadly neutralizing antibodies, able to target different sites of the virus, according to Zhang Linqi, the leading scientist involved in the treatment and also a professor at the School of Medicine at Tsinghua University.

“Antibody drugs and vaccines are complementary to each other, each having its role in disease prevention and treatment,” Zhang said in December 2021, as interviewed by The Paper, a Chinese digital news outlet.

Apart from this cocktail therapy, China has been making progress in developing COVID-19 drugs in the past three years with the most recent one being a nasal-spray based monoclonal antibody drug, F61.

Developed by Sinopharm, the pharmaceutical corporate responsible for producing the country’s inactivated COVID-19 vaccines, F61 was approved for clinical trial on November 28. It is also a broad-spectrum neutralizing antibody with highly active response against Omicron variants.

Its nasal-spray allows the drug to directly act on the nasopharyngeal upper respiratory tract, forming a protective membrane on the nasal mucosa, the company said.

Along with the development and production of other COVID-19 drugs, they help to reduce the severity of symptoms and to prevent hospitalization and death in people who become infected with COVID-19.

But on the baseline, getting people vaccinated is the most effective way of impeding the virus from mutating, as said by an expert from Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In an interview with China Media Group in April 2021, Wang Huaqing, CDC’s chief scientist for the Immunization Plan, said that China needs at least 1 billion people being inoculated in order to build immunity protection.

By December 7, 2022, about 3.45 billion vaccine jabs had been administered and more than 228 million people above 60 had been fully inoculated as of November 28, accounting for over 86 percent of the total population in that age group, according to the National Health Commission.

That is, over 90 percent of people in China have received their full inoculation of COVID-19 vaccines – including a booster injection.

China is now rolling out campaign for second booster shots, particularly among the elderly people.

With continuous breakthrough in its vaccine development, China now has COVID-19 vaccines that can be given to people in ways of injection, inhaled and nasal spray.

It is also accelerating the development of its messenger RNA based vaccines, one of which has been approved for emergency use in Indonesia in September.

Arctech to Supply 2.8 GW Skyline II Solar Tracking Solution in India

AHMEDABAD, India, Dec. 21, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Arctech, the world’s leading tracking, racking, and BIPV solutions provider, has inked the deal to supply 2.8 GW of SkyLine II single-axis solar trackers for the solar project with a total capacity of 15GW in Khavda of Gujarat district, India. Hitachi Energy and Linxon support National Grid in achieving sustainability targets through pioneering 420 kV SF6-free gas-insulated switchgear technology

Strengthening key power infrastructure in London while reducing carbon footprint

Zurich, Switzerland, Dec. 21, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Hitachi Energy and Linxon are collaborating to strengthen London Power Tunnels (LPT), a key power infrastructure project that will ensure reliable, clean electricity supply for England’s capital city. To support National Grid in accelerating its net zero targets, Hitachi Energy will deliver EconiQ™ 420-kilovolt (kV) gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) and gas-insulated lines (GIL) containing no sulfur hexafluoride (SF6).

As one of the world’s largest investor-owned transmission and distribution utilities, National Grid has the ambition to remove all SF6 from its fleet by 2050. In 2020, it embarked on LPT project that will replace ageing high-voltage electricity cables and expand network capacity to meet the increasing electricity demand. Considered to be one of the city’s largest engineering projects since the 1960s, the LPT will span 32.5 kilometers via underground tunnels in South London.

Linxon is building Bengeworth Road substation for National Grid to develop the LPT infrastructure. To support National Grid in its transition to SF6-free solutions, Hitachi Energy will deliver 7 bays of its EconiQ 420 kV GIS to enable the transmission of electricity over long distances while eliminating SF6, in addition to EconiQ 420 kV GIL. The EconiQ high-voltage portfolio is 100 percent as reliable as the conventional solutions based on SF6. The installation is expected to commence by 2023.
