Ghana to get herbal anti-snake venom soon – Centre for Plant Medicine Research

The Centre for Plant Medicine Research – Mampong Akuapem (CPMR) is developing herbal anti-snake venom as a natural remedy to save the lives of people who are bitten by snakes.

Researchers at the Centre are currently conducting trials on the product, which is about 80-90 per cent complete.

Mr Kwadwo Asare Agyei, Head, Public Relations and Marketing, CPMR, said researchers are ‘seriously’ working on the product to ensure its efficiency.

He said the Centre was hopeful that the Government would adopt the product when it was ready to help stem deaths associated with snakebites and address the repeated shortage of anti-snake venom.

‘We don’t joke with standardisation. So, we want to make it a policy that whenever we are through (standardisation) with this particular venom, Government will come on board, probably adopt the product and give it to the Ghanaian populace,’ Mr Agyei said.

The World Health Organisation has considered snakebite as a neglected tropical disease that plagued rural communities.

The suppl
y of anti-snake venom to health facilities particularly those in rural communities has not been regular over the years.

To make up for the shortage, some rural folks resort to local remedies, including ‘black stone’ which many believe sucks the venom from a reptile bite when placed on the wound.

In 2019 for instance, Kwahu Afram Plains, a town in the in the Eastern Region recorded an increment in deaths from snakebites due to what medical officers described as delay in reporting the cases to hospitals after resorting to the use of local concoctions.

The Presbyterian Hospital at Donkorkrom in the Kwahu Afram Plains North recorded five mortality cases from snakebites as against two in 2018, making snakebites the third cause of death at the Hospital as compared to 2018 when it was ranked 10th.

Mr Agyei said the CPMR was constantly researching into emerging challenge to guide the development of efficient plant-based medicines.

He said the acceptability of herbal medicine improved after the COVID-19 pandemic,
but called for continuous education and sensitisation to clear misconceptions about the use of herbal medicines.

‘We have not lost focus on some of our products which have been taken to Nuguchi to work on to see how effective we can work on the COVID-19; we are about 75-80 per cent through. It has proven to be very successful,’ he said.

In 2021, the CPMR was adjudged the outstanding research and development Company (Herbal Medicine) at the Ghana Business Standard Awards for its diligence and work output.

The Centre also won the Herbal Company of the Year at the Ghana Pharma Awards the same year.

Mr Agyei appealed to manufacturers of herbal products to submit their products to the Centre for quality testing to meet regulatory standards and ensure the safety of consumers.

‘We are going to assist them (manufacturers) to run the necessary tests to secure their certificate. Acquiring the certificates will boost the public’s confidence in the products they are taking,’ he said.

Mr. Yao Gomado, Member of Parliament (MP) for Akan Constituency, in partnership with Life Time Wells Vision, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has organised a free eye screening exercise for the constituents.

Mr Gomado said the exercise held in the Kadjebi District of the Oti Region was meant to improve the sights of the constituents, but not to make them blind.

He said it was also aimed to provide accessible eye care service to the constituents, with a focus on early detection and treatment of eye conditions.

The Akan MP said the eye served as the light of human beings, so good sight was necessary for everyone.

‘I don’t have money to share with you, so this is my money to you,’ he told beneficiaries.

‘I believe that initiative like this is crucial in promoting community health and well-being,’ he added.

Ms Yayra Amegashie, a General Nurse and a member of the medical team, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that routine check-up of eye helped one to know the strength of the eye.

She said regular eye
examination also helped prevent damage and sight loss.

Mr. Geoffrey Foli, a 94- year-old beneficiary told GNA that though old, he wanted to know his eye condition.

He advised the youth to be honest and avoid excessive alcohol since it affects the human body.

Some 9,023 constituents have benefitted since the inception of the exercise three years ago.

Enam Hadzide registers over 1000 people under NHIS in Asuogyaman

Mr. Pius Enam Hadzide, the 2024 New Patriotic Party parliamentary candidate for Asuogyaman Constituency in the Eastern Region, has registered about 1000 people under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), to enable them to freely access medical care.

Mr Hadzide told the Ghana News Agency that what prompted him to take that action was the frequent requests he had been receiving from the residents to assist them with their medical bills.

He said that the NHIS had greatly benefited many individuals in the country by providing free healthcare but pointed out that there were still people in the constituency who have not registered or were unable to renew their expired cards.

According to him, the ongoing exercise was open to all residents of Asuogyaman, free from any political affiliation, and therefore encouraged everyone to participate in it.

‘Since I’m not a member of parliament, I think it necessary to help my Constituents in a way that would facilitate their future which is why I’m registering and r
enewing their health insurance cards,’ he said.

He expressed his commitment to registering all residents in the constituency, which consists of 37 electoral areas and 144 polling stations, including Boso, Agya Bui, Tosen Nanor, Labolabo, Fintey, Frankadua, Mpakadan, South Senchi, Akrade, Abume, Kpedzi, Mpamprase, Abomayaw, and Apeguso. Mr Hadzide said his focus was on improving healthcare for the people of Asuogyaman, with plans to prioritised the act if elected as an MP.

Mr Klenam Kudjo, a beneficiary, expressed his gratitude to the parliamentary candidate for his support, adding that 10 members of his family including his grandchildren, have all benefited from the exercise.

Dr Anthony Adofo Ofosu, the Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) said awarding and recognising health workers was the passion of the GHS council.

He said the maiden national health workers award was held in November 2023,
and hoped this year’s ceremony would be better.

Dr Ofosu commended the municipality for buying into the staff award scheme and thanked the various sponsors who had contributed immensely to make the award ceremony possible, and ‘I will be really looking forward to seeing some of your award winners at the national award in November this year,’ he added.

Mr Timothy Kobina Ofori, the Municipal Director of Health Service thanked the sponsors for providing all the items that they needed to reward their staff.

He said, ‘All the health indicators are not looking good. Some are also looking so bad, and we believe with the inception of this award our staff will be motivated and our cherished clients will be given the best service’.

Nana Nteboah Prah IV, the Divisional Chief of Himan-Prestea Traditional Area, added that awarding health personnel within our Municipality was a good initiative adopted by the health directorate.

He explained that ‘We do health reviews from time to time, we criticise and we look at our
shortfalls and see what we can do in the years ahead then that ends.

‘Few take steps to say thank you to most of the health personnel but this being the first in our Municipality, it will serve as a motivation for the staff to pour out their hearts in delivering quality services,’ he said.

Some awardees who interacted with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said the recognition would inspire them to put in more effort to safe life.

Mr Nurudeen Jamio, the Administrator of the Prestea Government hospital and secretary to the awards interviews committee, giving further insight into the award processes said the Municipal Director of Health Service constituted a nine-member committee to interview 32 nominees from CHPS, health centres and hospitals.

He said every facility was asked to nominate their best for the various categories, adding that ‘even though all the nominees are health personnel, their work requirement, challenges and dynamics are different across the facility levels and in the GHS, we have different fa
cility levels’.

‘We have hospitals that are higher than health centers, health centers are higher than CHPS. So, if you want to merge all staff over there and access them it is not going to be fair, because their daily issues are different, so we group them according to the levels,’ he said.

Mr Jamio said they were assessed on communication abilities, clinical excellence, leadership, professional development, community impact and advocacy, of which the raw results were compiled and presented for the selections to be made.

He lauded the Municipal Director of Health Service for bringing several stakeholders together to assist the programme, with the current understanding that health financing was a multi-sectoral collaboration.
