Farmers Deserve to Have Good Prices from Their Hard Labour- President Barrow

As part of the ongoing Meet the People Tour, President Adama Barrow visited the Trans-Gambia Highway, NBR Roads Project Lots 1 and 2 in Sabach Sanjal and Kerr Jimbala, respectively, on Wednesday.

The Trans-Gambia highway has a futuristic plan for expansion to accommodate transit vehicles plying the subregion. This is part of the ECOWAS integration programme to enhance trade within Africa.

Reacting to the rousing welcome at the new Sabach Sukoto road junction, the President said it is a social contract to impact the lives of citizens, adding, “when we build roads, they connect people. That is why they elected me.” President Barrow commended Areski for the timely completion of the road and for working within a budget. He called on other contractors to emulate them.

The ongoing 8KM Kaur-Jimbala Road is progressing and, upon completion, will connect the communities on the border with Senegal and ease socio-economic activities.

The President also stopped at the Fajara Stone mining site at Kaur, initiated by a native of Allunhareh in the URR, Muhammad Sissoho. The mining site processes stones into different grades for construction and bricklaying.

The President then proceeded to Njau for a joint meeting of the Lower and Upper Saloum and Nianija Constituencies. He also held a similar meeting in Laminkoto for Niani and Sami constituencies.

During the meetings, President Barrow was seen listening attentively as the locals expressed their concerns while praising the ongoing development initiatives in their regions. The President reassured them that despite the world economic crisis, his administration ensures reasonable pricing of essential commodities.

As the trade season kicks off on 1st December, President Barrow announced an increase in the price of groundnuts per ton from D28,000 to D32,000 as evidence of his government’s commitment to agriculture. “Farmers deserve to have good prices from their hard labour,” He stressed and urged Gambians to get involved in agriculture as his government is committed to supporting the sector.

The President called on the farmers to sell their groundnuts and other cereals to the government, revealing plans to make fertiliser available for the next rainy season.

The foundation-laying ceremony for the University of Science, Engineering, and Technology multipurpose centre in Wassu, CRR, was another significant highlight of day three of the tour. When the centre is completed, it will offer young people in the area the chance to develop technical and vocational skills that will help them enter the workforce. The centre’s construction aligns with the government’s intention to invest in TVET programmes to mitigate youth unemployment and irregular migration.

UN strongly condemns airfield attack in Central African Republic; 1 peacekeeper killed

UNITED NATIONS, The United Nations (UN) on Saturday strongly condemned an attack on an airfield in southeastern Central African Republic (CAR) which left a Moroccan peacekeeper dead.

The attack against UN peacekeepers at the Obo airfield on Thursday happened during a UN-led operation to secure the perimeter of the airfield to allow planes to land.

In his statement released via his spokesperson’s office, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the attack and expressed his deepest condolences to the family of the fallen peacekeeper and to the kingdom and people of Morocco.

He said that such attacks “may constitute war crimes under international law” and called on the CAR government “to spare no effort in identifying the perpetrators of this tragedy so that they can be brought to justice swiftly.”

The Security Council issued a statement late on Friday, condemning the attack “in the strongest terms,” stressing that anybody found to be involved in the planning, direction or sponsoring of such attacks could be sanctioned.

One of the poorest countries in the world, CAR is beset by violence between feuding domestic groups, ethnic tension and raids by international armed groups.

Worried About Ebola, Uganda Extends Outbreak Epicenter’s Quarantine

KAMPALA, UGANDA — Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has extended a quarantine placed on two districts that are the epicenter of the country’s Ebola outbreak by 21 days, adding that his government’s response to the disease was succeeding.

Movement into and out of the Mubende and Kassanda districts in central Uganda will be restricted up to Dec. 17, the presidency said late Saturday. It was originally imposed for 21 days on Oct. 15, then extended for the same period Nov. 5.

The extension is “to further sustain the gains in control of Ebola that we have made, and to protect the rest of the country from continued exposure,” according to Museveni.

The government’s anti-Ebola efforts were succeeding with two districts now going for roughly two weeks without new cases, the president said.

“It may be too early to celebrate any successes, but overall, I have been briefed that the picture is good,” he said in a statement.

The East African nation has so far recorded 141 infections. Fifty-five people have died since the outbreak of the deadly hemorrhagic fever was declared on Sept. 20th.

Although the outbreak was gradually being brought under control, the “situation is still fragile,” Museveni said, adding that the country’s weak health system and circulation of misinformation about the disease were still a challenge.

The Ebola virus circulating in Uganda is the Sudan strain, for which there is no proven vaccine, unlike the more common Zaire strain, which spread during recent outbreaks in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo.
